Golf tee

In golf, a tee is normally used for the first stroke of each hole, and the area from which this first stroke is hit is informally also known as the teeing ground. Normally, teeing the ball is allowed only on the first shot of a hole, called the tee shot, and is illegal for any other shot; however, local or seasonal rules may allow or require teeing for other shots as well, e.g., under "winter rules" to protect the turf when it is unusually vulnerable. Teeing gives a considerable advantage for drive shots, so it is normally done whenever allowed. However, a player may elect to play his/her tee shot without a tee. This typically gives the shot a lower trajectory.

A standard golf tee is 2.125" (two and one eighth inches) long, but both longer and shorter tees are permitted and are preferred by some players. Now, designs of these golf tees have a slight adjustment with the holster for the ball, better known as zero friction or more trajectory tees. These generally have a tri-holster, which some people find hard to balance the ball on. Ordinary tees can be made from wood or from durable plastic.

According to the R&A rule book, for a tee to be legal, "It must not be longer than 4 inches (101.6 mm) and it must not be designed or manufactured in such a way that it could indicate the line of play or influence the movement of the ball.

Mickelson's mother diagnosed with breast cancer

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Six weeks after Phil Mickelson announced his wife had breast cancer, his mother was diagnosed with the disease and is to have surgery later this week.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reported on its Web site that Mary Mickelson discovered she had breast cancer last week. She is to have surgery Friday at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, the same hospital where Mickelson's wife, Amy, had surgery last Wednesday.

Mickelson's sister, Tina, told the newspaper she wanted to make her mother's condition know so she could receive the same outpouring of support and prayers that meant so much to Amy Mickelson.

Mickelson has not spoken publicly since the U.S. Open where he was a runner-up for a record fifth time.

His parents live in the same San Diego house where they raised their three children. Mary Mickelson was honored in 1998 as ``Mother of the Year'' by the San Diego chapter of the March of Dimes. She said at the time, ``I don't know if I've done anything extra than other mothers. We've always been involved and have just been there.''

Mickelson said at Bethpage Black that it was ``highly unlikely'' he would play the British Open, and said his schedule the rest of the year depended on his wife's battle with cancer.

Golf club

Golf clubs are used in the sport of golf to hit a golf ball. Each club is composed of a shaft with a lance (grip) and a clubhead. Woods are used for long-distance fairway shots; irons, the most versatile class, are used for a variety of shots; putters are used mainly on the green to roll the ball into the cup.

An important variation in different clubs is loft, or the angle between the club's face and the vertical plane. It is loft that makes a golf ball leave the tee on an ascending trajectory, not the angle of swing; all swings contact the ball with a horizontal motion. The impact of the club compresses the ball, while grooves on the clubface give the ball backspin (which would appear as a clockwise spin on the ball when viewed from the standpoint of a right-swinging golfer, or as a counter-clockwise spin when viewed from the standpoint of a left-swinging golfer). Together, the compression and backspin create lift. The majority of woods and irons are labeled with a number; higher numbers indicate shorter shafts and higher lofts, which give the ball a higher and shorter trajectory.

While the variation of clubs can differ greatly between golfers, a set used to play a round of golf must have no more than 14 clubs. A full set typically consists of a driver, two fairway woods (generally 3- and 5-woods), a set of irons from 3 to 9, a pitching wedge, a sand wedge, a putter, and one more club of the player's choice. Many players opt to avoid the long irons (that many find difficult to hit), and replace them with more forgiving clubs, like hybrids.

Golf Balls

The Titleist Pro V1 golf ball is designed for serious golfers of all levels that demand Tour-validated technology and performance. The ball offers such essential features as a soft and resilient core that improves your feel and distance, a resilient Ionomer casing layer, and a high-performance Urethane Elastomer cover. The technologies combine to produce low spin off your driver or irons, while maintaining soft compression for outstanding feel when approaching the greens. Golfers will especially appreciate the Pro V1's Drop-and-Stop control, which helps them better influence the spin on approach shots. The A.I.M. side stamp, meanwhile, is terrific for putting, as it helps you align the ball with the hole. Other details include a higher-coverage 392-dimple design that improves the flight trajectory and a staggered wave parting line that enhances distance. The Titleist Pro V1 represents the coalescence of three of Titleist's industry leading technologies: large solid core, multi-component construction, and high performance Urethane Elastomer cover technology. Fast initial velocity, lower spin and high launch combine to produce a flatter, less arcing ascent and straight ball flight for exceptional driver and long iron distance. The trajectory profile of the New Titleist Pro V1 generates a steep angle of descent into the green and provides Drop-and-Stop performance on approach shots.
